It seems self-indulgent to dwell upon a single death in these times of many, but a giant passed yesterday.
Tony Allen, probably the best drummer in the world, died in Paris at the age of 79. Always cited as the joint creator of Afrobeat along with Fela Kuti (I would argue as the drummer he had more to do with it), legend has it that when he left Kuti’s band they needed two, or three drummers to replace him (the exact numbers varied) I can well believe that.

His last LP, Rejoice, a brilliant collaboration with Hugh Masekela, was just released weeks ago. One track on it, ‘Never (Lagos Never Gonna Be the Same)’ is a joyful tribute to Fela Kuti and the legacy he created in Lagos, now with Allen’s passing we need new lyrics because the world is never gone be the same, never mind Lagos.
We need joy, not mourning. This is joy in the purest form I know.
The best I can do in the circumstances. Jubilani Nang’u Tony, E’Shay Izighubhu!

We just listened to Tony and Hugh. I guess more is in order.
That’s about a nice a compliment as a musician could likely get – it takes several people to replace the contributions.
A bit like me at work, I’d imagine.
Damn. I hadn’t heard this news. RIP. Thanks for posting.
Nice tribute!! Another sad loss for music.
Well said, Joe. Cheers.
Thanks for posting – I didn’t even read about this anywhere.

I think this is the third drummer to die so far in 2020. What a shame rest in peace Tony.
Not self indulgent AT ALL. RIP T.A.
Thank you Tref. I’ve always had a one for a bit of hero worship.
