Wilko Johnson: R.I.P

Just when I think I had given up on doing R.I.P posts, the divine Wilko Johnson goes and follows Nik Turner up into the furthersphere.

It really is no exaggeration to say that Wilko was one of those rare musicians who changed the flow of music. His choppy, percussive style of playing – effectively playing rhythm and lead guitar simultaneously, fed from Dr Feelgood into the British punk scene and then, much later into the whole post-punk diaspora.

Not only that but the man had the ultimate wired staring stage presence and gave good shows even after surviving long into overtime following his 2013 ‘a few months to live’ cancer diagnosis. My parents and I both saw him on his ‘farewell’ tour and it was emotional.

So, adieu Wilko, we were better with you here.

One of my favourite songs ever.

  1. Here’s something I think you’ll dig. Joe Ely is up there with my favorite musicians and people. Seen him various times over the years. This cut was done when I first seen him. Some of the best live music Ive seen and heard. Your buddy Wilko explodes at he 4 minute mark. Great rock n roll.
