This is the life, reading comics outside in the garden being lulled to sleep by the sound of bees. I’m a big fan of Sundays. So what have I reached for on this most tranquil of days? Dethlok The Demolisher, that’s who. My copies, passed on to me by my generous Uncle Jim date from 1974 and like I found with DC’s The Shadow were pretty strong stuff for the time. Rich Buckley’s art throughout is superb.
Basically Deathlok riffs on the whole creator/created, Frankenstein, Blade Runner, Robocop automaton with its’ own mind bag of concepts – although pre-dating several of those. Basically Luther Manning, soldier, survives death and wakes to find himself a cyborg created under the auspices of Project: Alpha Mech. You can guess the rest as his humanity starts to assert itself over the various nefarious deeds he is sent to carry out. He has a constant running commentary from/battle against the computer implanted in his skull. Like me.

What I liked is that my uncle found a little extra strip where they drew a jokey strip based on the creation of the comic – how post-modern and meta is this?
An unfairly forgotten character I think; in this house at least, Deathlok lives!
388 Down (still).

Great colours in the art. Sort of luminous. Lovely.
Deathlok sounds like it could’ve been the inspiration for Robocop. I’m only vaguely familiar with Deathlok. I always get him confused with Deadshot, the DC version of Marvel’s Deadpool. For 1974 the technology they write about is pretty advanced, and foreshadowing of things to come.
My son and I recently started watching the TV series ‘Arrow’, about Green Arrow. Both Deathlok and Deadshot make an appearance, and both before technology takes over their humanity.
Very cool stuff.
I’ve no idea how long his one ran for, my copies go on ’til end of 1975 I think. Deathlok was a mean dude though by the standards of the times.
I also have no idea if he’s ever been resurrected, or tinkered with since. It’s cool he appeared on Arrow.
I love the comics from 60s / 70s.
